Converting inches to yards

Sometimes you need to know how many yards of fabric you will need for a given quilt length, as when you are using a striped fabric or cutting borders without seams.

To convert running inches to yards, divide the total number by 36, this is the number of inches in a yard.  If the resulting number contains a decimal, simply refer to the chart below and choose the nearest fraction.

For example, if your quilt is 98 inches long, divide 98 inches by 36 to equal 2.722.  Refer to the chart and you’ll see the next HIGHEST decimal to .722 is .75.  You will need to buy 2 ¾ yards of fabric.  Always round up to the nearest decimal or 1/8 yard.
