Workshops - Jewel Box (3 hour virtual class)

Jewel Box (3 hour virtual class)

This is a beautiful quilt with the illusion of depth. Don’t let it scare you, the piecing is easy, created from just triangles! Believe it or not, this stunning quilt is created with just one block, done in different colors. Quilt is 48” x 48”.  Different layouts will be discussed in class.

Karen will send a fabric selection video, supply list and pre-cutting video before class.

In class, we will look at value tips, fabric placement, cutting and sewing tips, layout options, border options and start sewing.  Students will get quite a few blocks done in class.

SUPPLY LIST (virtual class)

  • Rotary Cutter
  • Medium rotary mat
  • Rotary ruler for cutting your strips
  • 6½” x 6½” (or similar size) rotary ruler for squaring up triangle units

(I like the Omnigrid square ruler that has a 45° line down the middle of the ruler, as shown here.)

  • Light gray piecing thread for sewing machine
  • ¼” foot (or set up your machine with a ¼” seam allowance)
  • Basic sewing supplies you always like to work with (thread clips, seam ripper, pins, etc.)

Fabric Selection

Pick 4 colors, Karen used blue, blue/green, purple and green.  Feel free to select your own colors.  Once you have your 4 colors, you will need a light, medium and dark of each color.  See below for details about yardages.

Select non-busy fabrics for the best results. Examples would be tone on tone basics or tone on tone batiks.

Be sure to watch Karen’s video about fabric selection before selecting your fabrics. Video is located here.
